SUVA, Fiji Islands (January 5, 1999 - PACNEWS)---The search is escalating for an American tourist missing in Fiji for almost two weeks.

Jeffrey Jackson, 38, left the Backpackers Resort on the island of Waya in the Yasawa group of islands on the morning of December 22.

After an unsuccessful search by the resort owners earlier, two friends, a brother and a sister began a detailed search of Waya island yesterday.

They hired a helicopter and local villagers to help in the search, which ended unsuccessfully.

One of Jackson's friends, Christine Whitby, an experienced hiker, said she will hold talks with U.S. embassy and army personnel in efforts to expand the search effort.

Jackson's family has offered a reward of $1,000 for anyone who finds him.
