SOLOMON ISLANDS YOUTH WARNED ABOUT HIV/AIDS

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (January 4, 1999 - PACNEWS)---The Governor General of the Solomon Islands, Sir Moses Pitakaka, has warned of an HIV/AIDS infested Solomon Islands if young people continue to engage in promiscuous sex.

In his New Year's message, the Governor General said with the high rate of sexually transmitted diseases among its young people, the country will soon join other island nations with growing numbers of HIV/AIDS cases.

Solomon Islands has so far officially recorded only one HIV case.

Sir Moses said there already are high rates of premarital sex, teenage pregnancies, alcohol consumption and drug abuse among young people.

Such trends, he stressed, will lead to more HIV/AIDS cases.

He appealed to young people to heed the advice of their parents and the churches.
