NUKU‘ALOFA, Tonga (January 6, 1999 - PACNEWS/Radio Tonga)---Telecommunications workers on Tonga's main island of Tongatapu are still attempting to restore telephone services to 10 percent of the island's subscribers.

The telephone lines of more than 700 private and corporate telephone subscribers remain out of order, after Cyclone Cora hit the island during the Christmas weekend.

At the end of the year end holidays on Monday, the Telecommunications Commission sent out seven teams of linesmen and technicians to repair overhead lines and cables destroyed during the cyclone.

Telephone lines have also been damaged on other islands, but not to the same extent as on Tongatapu.
