SOLOMON ISLANDS PREPARING SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES POLICY

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (January 7, 1999 - PACNEWS/SIBC)---The Solomon Islands Ministry of Health and Medical Services plans to have a national policy on HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in place by the middle of this year.

Under Secretary of Health Improvement, Dennie Iniakwala, said the policy will include recommended ways to prevent and regulate HIV/AIDS and various other STDs, and guidelines on how the community should treat a victims.

Dr. Iniakwala said dealing with these issues is a challenge for the Ministry because of the social stigma attached to STD patients.
