SUVA, Fiji Islands (January 11, 1999 - PACNEWS)---Mystery surrounds the discovery of the body of an American tourist who had been missing in Fiji for two weeks.

Jeffrey Jackson, age 38, disappeared on the island of Waya in Fiji's Yasawa Group after he left the Paradise Backpackers Resort for a walk.

A six-man search and rescue team flown in from Florida by Jackson's brother and sister found his body on Saturday, after unsuccessful efforts last week by an experienced tracker friend from the U.S. and more than 50 villagers, a dozen policemen and a hired helicopter.

The helicopter pilot spotted Jackson's badly decomposed body on a cliff on Saturday afternoon, just as the team was giving up hope of finding him.

Police are baffled by how Jackson reached the part of the cliff where his body was found because there are no trails to that point.

A postmortem will be carried out today to determine the cause of death.
