SUVA, Fiji Islands (January 15, 1999 - PACNEWS)---Fiji will install public condom vending machines next month, according to the Daily Post.

The newspaper quotes the Coordinator of the National Advisory Committee on AIDS (NACA), Dr. Lepani Waqatakirewa, as saying that five machines will arrive in Fiji by the end of this month and will be placed in a handful of nightclubs in Suva.

Dr. Waqatakirewa is quoted as saying the nightclubs will not be paid for keeping the machines on their premises and the Ministry of Health will be responsible for the maintenance of the machines.

He said NACA started seriously looking at obtaining the machines last year. They will dispense a pack of two condoms for one Fiji dollar (US$ 0.52).

The response to the first five machines will determine whether more will be installed in other parts of the country.

According to Dr. Waqatakirewa, NACA's plans to install the machines in gasoline stations has been put on hold temporarily.
