EASTERN PAPUA NEW GUINEA SHAKEN BY EARTHQUAKE

BUKA, Papua New Guinea (January 20, 1999 - Radio Australia)---The eastern parts of Papua New Guinea have been shaken by an earthquake with a magnitude of seven-point-one (7.1) on the Richter scale.

The earthquake was located at a depth of 100 kilometers (60 miles) and about 100 kilometers (60 miles) north-northeast of Buka island, adjacent to Bougainville.

The Chief Government Seismologist in Port Moresby, Dr. Horst Letz, said there have been no reports of damage from and of the small islands north of Buka.
