PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (January 27, 1999 - Samoa News)--It took only minutes for the Senate Committee-of-the-Whole to pass a proposed law to increase members of the Fono's (legislature's) annual office expense fund by $380,000.

Under current laws, the office expense fund for each member of the legislature is $5,000 a year, while the Senate President and the House Speaker each receive $10,000. This fund is separate from annual salaries.

The bill now calls for an increase to $15,000 annually to each member of the Senate and the House of Representatives and $20,000 a year to the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives.

For all 17 Senators and 21 Representatives, this would be a total of $580,000, an increase of $380,000 from the present.
