HONIARA, Solomon Islands (January 27, 1999 - PACNEWS/SIBC)---The Guadalcanal Provincial Disaster Committee has recommended that the national government declare certain parts of the province as disaster areas.

The Secretary to the Province's Disaster Committee, Victor Totu, said last week's floods destroyed peoples' food gardens in Malango, Gaobata, East Tasimboko, Paripao, Vulolo and Aola and the people there need immediate help.

Totu said since last Thursday, the Committee and staff have collaborated with the National Disaster Council to evacuate people, and check and assess the damage caused by flooding on the Guadalcanal plains.

While the committee continues its damage assessment work, Totu said, the National Disaster Council should help the flood stricken people obtain food supplies.
