HONIARA, Solomon Islands (January 27, 1999 - Radio Australia)---Two top New Zealand detectives are in the Solomon Islands carrying out an inquiry into the shooting of a militant leader of the illegal Guadalcanal Liberation Army.

The New Zealand High Commission in Honiara said the investigation was requested by the Solomon Islands Police Force, which wants an independent investigation into the shooting by one of its officers.

He said the detectives are expected to be in the Solomon Islands for two or three weeks.

The investigation is being conducted under the current defense pact between the Solomons and New Zealand.
