U.S. PEACE CORPS NAMES NAGLER TO NEW PACIFIC INITIATIVES POSITION

HONOLULU, Hawai‘i (January 29, 1999 - PIDP/CPIS/Hulsen)---The Peace Corps country director in Samoa, Steve Nagler, has been named to the newly created position of Pacific Initiatives Director.

In making the announcement in Washington, Peace Corps Director Mark Gearan said Nagler's new position reflects the Peace Corps' continued commitment to the Pacific Islands region, where about 350 volunteers currently are serving.

Nagler, 51, will coordinate partnerships between the Peace Corps and Pacific governments and non-profit organizations in such areas as health, education, environmental awareness and disaster relief.

In his new position, Nagler, a Graduate of Amherst and Smith colleges in Massachusetts, temporarily will continue to work as Samoa country director.

Earlier, he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Samoa's government radio station, working in the areas of news and documentary programming.
