MELBOURNE, Australia-(February 7, 1999 - Radio Australia)---Two U.S. Navy destroyers from Pearl Harbor have docked at Melbourne's Station Pier.

The USS Fletcher and the USS Paul Hamilton are visiting Melbourne on their way home to Hawai‘i, after serving in the Gulf of Arabia.

The USS Fletcher's Combat Systems Operator, Lieutenant Mark Oberly, said his crew helped administer the UN's oil for food program.

"We were the inspecting ship. The UN -- what it does -- Iraq sells its oil and it goes into UN funds and then they use that fund to buy food.

"What we did was inspect the incoming food ships to make sure they weren't bringing anything illegal in. That was our main purpose when we were there," Oberly said.
