SUVA, Fiji Islands (February 10, 1999 - PACNEWS/INCL)---Fiji will have a new army commander by the end of February.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said the government will announce the name of the new commander on February 28, adding that the position will go to a senior officer within the army.

Commander Ratu Epeli Ganilau resigned last week to enter politics, after 29 years in the army and nine years as commander.

The son of the late President, Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau is believed to be interested in joining the Christian Democratic Party, formed mainly by ministers and members of the Methodist Church in Fiji. However, he is yet to publicly announce the party under whose banner he will contest the May national election.

Rabuka has denied his ruling SVT party has offered Ratu Epeli a ticket. However, he said Ratu Epeli is welcome to participate in the election as a representative of SVT.
