TONGA RECEIVES JAPANESE GOVERNMENT FUNDING FOR 16 PROJECTS

NUKU‘ALOFA, Tonga (February 16, 1999 - PACNEWS/Radio Tonga)---The government of Japan has provided grants worth almost US$ 265,000 for 16 development projects in the Kingdom of Tonga.

The grants, provided under Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects program, are for Fiscal Year 1998-1999.

Ambassador Jiro Kobayashi said the assistance is part of Japan's ongoing commitment to promoting grassroots level development in Tonga.

The projects include the provision of a bus for disabled people at Alonga Center on the main island of Tongatapu and the construction of classrooms at government-run primary schools and colleges in Tongatapu, Ha‘apai and Vava‘u.
