SUVA, Fiji Islands (February 19, 1999 - PACNEWS)---A detachment of 30 Fiji soldiers left Thursday for a five-month attachment in New Zealand.

They will be based with the First Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, based in Linton.

The troops will return to Fiji in June, but will be replaced by another 30-member detachment.

An army spokesman said the exercise will help enhance the traditional defense ties between the two countries, and give the Fiji soldiers increased training opportunities to broaden their military skills and knowledge.

The attachments are part of New Zealand's regional defense assistance activities.
