SUVA’S WATER SUPPLY STILL LIMITED

SUVA, Fiji Islands (March 9, 1999 – Radio Australia)---Fiji's capital, Suva, continues to be plagued by major water supply problems.

Thousands of factory workers and students in the capital area were sent home yesterday because there was no water in schools and places of business.

Many suburban homes have been without piped water since Friday and the Public Works Department is unable to give guarantees as to when supplies will be restored.

The University of the South Pacific cancelled classes for about 4,000 students because of the water problems.

The water crisis began on Friday when residents in Suva and surrounding areas were warned of a 12-hour shutdown to allow the Public Works Department to carry out major repair work to one of the main pipes supplying the city. But, the new pipes burst a few hours after installation and the problems continue.
