SUVA, Fiji Islands (March 9, 1999 - PACNEWS)---Women candidates vying for parliamentary seats in the May general elections will have the opportunity to use the same multi-party election campaign fund.

The initiative came from Fiji's National Council of Women, which says all women candidates will be helped despite their political differences.

The council has set up a body called the Fiji Women's Caucus to administer the funds. The Fiji Women's Rights Movement yesterday donated US$ 510 to the Women's Caucus.

Eight women have been nominated by various political parties to run in the elections so far, but about 15 are expected to vie for seats in Parliament as the election date draws closer.

Also yesterday, in a first of its kind event, all the women candidates held a joint campaign rally in Suva. They called on all women voters to vote for female candidates, rather than along party lines.
