PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (March 9, 1999 - PACNEWS)---Papua New Guinea's Opposition leader, Bernard Narokobi, says his country is in danger of being governed by an Africa-type dictatorship.

Narokobi was speaking after returning from Nigeria, where he was among a Commonwealth team of observers attending Nigeria's presidential elections.

He said the Government is heading towards dictatorship by wanting total control over Parliament and the civil service, and by beginning to weaken the judiciary through political manipulation.

Narokobi said the Government wants total control without observing any legal, ethical and moral principles, including the consideration of the views of ordinary people.

Until members of Parliament realize that the people's rights and interests have to come before those of the executive Government, he stressed, Papua New Guinea is in danger of totally destroying democracy, in the same way as have African nations.
