SUVA, Fiji Islands (March 10, 1999 - PACNEWS)---A group of businessmen in Fiji have come together to start a new newspaper that will have the same name as a popular daily that closed during the 1987 military coups.

The first edition of the Fiji Sun will reportedly hit newsstands late in April.

Local distribution giant, C. J. Patel, Ltd., Fijian Holdings, Ltd., and about a dozen supermarkets have gone into partnership to set up the Fiji Sun.

The newspaper is being set up by a former sales manager of the Fiji Times, the News, Ltd.-owned daily which faced stiff competition from the previous Fiji Sun, when it was forced to close in 1987 for refusing to comply with the then army regime's censorship guidelines.

The newspaper has reportedly offered the editor's job to a former News, Ltd. employee who was editor-in- chief of the Fiji Times for three years.
