HONIARA, Solomon Islands (March 16, 1999 - PACNEWS/SIBC)---Two Members of the Solomon Islands Parliament have resigned from the Independent Group and aligned themselves with the Government.

The Parliamentary Office has confirmed receiving copies of resignation letters from Alfred Maetia and Rendova Tetepari Danny Philip, MP's from East Malaita.

Both parliamentarians cited the wishes of the majority of their constituents as the main reason for their decision to seek acceptance by the Government side.

Their resignation letters were addressed to the Leader of the Independent Group, Tommy Chan, with copies sent to the Governor General and the Speaker of Parliament.

The resignations mean the Independent Group's number in Parliament has been reduced to five -- and the ruling Solomon Islands Alliance for Change party has gained two more members.
