NUKU‘ALOFA, Tonga (March 17, 1999/Radio Tonga)---The national government has announced a new plan to help school dropouts.

An agreement has been signed between Skills New Zealand and the Tongan New Trust whereby the government will subsidize special education programs for dropouts.

The goal of the project, which will begin next week, is to provide students who leave before graduation with the qualifications and skills necessary to pursue career jobs.

The government hopes some of the dropouts then also will consider pursuing more formal education at polytechnicnical institutions and universities.
