SUVA, Fiji Islands (March 17, 1999 - PACNEWS)---A senior finance official says the Fiji government is ahead of many others in the region in resolving the Y2K computer bug problem.

Finance Secretary Savenaca Narube announced that the government will meet its goal of making all state-owned computers Year-2000 compliant by the third quarter of this year.

He said there is quite a lot of work yet to be done, but the government now has the appropriate systems and structures in place to deal with the computer problem.

Narube said the government has allocated just over US$ 10 million to resolve the matter, and a US$ 13,000 software program has been purchased to help detect which computers need to reprogrammed before midnight, December 31, 1999/January 1, 2000.
