ALOFI, Niue (March 21, 1999/TalaNet News/PIDP/CPIS)---Niue Premier Frank Lui lost his seat in the Niue Assembly during national elections Friday and it is uncertain who will become the country's leader for the next three years.

TalaNet News reports that Lui's Alofi North constituency seat went to Mrs. Va‘ainga Tukuitonga.

Cabinet member Aokuso Pavihi also lost his seat, to Billy Talagi, in the Avatele district.

Four of Niue's newly elected Assembly members are political independents and may hold the balance in forming a new government. They are Hima Douglas, Toke Talagi, Billy Talagi and Tofua Puletama.

During a meeting of the Niue People's Party (NPP) over the weekend, Sani Lakatani was elected leader and Young Vivian deputy. NPP claims it now has the numbers to form Niue's new government, but nothing is official.
