HONIARA, Solomon Islands (March 17, 1999 - PACNEWS/SIBC)---Taiwan's Ambassador, Pei Teng, reports it is impressed with the results of a rice production project in the Solomon Islands the Asian nation has been funding since last year.

The head of Taiwan's Technical Mission in the islands, Dr. John Chen, said more than 220 hectares (543.4 acres) of rice have been grown, adding that the 2,000 farmers involved in the program have had yields far beyond what the mission had expected.

If yields continue at the current pace, he predicts, the Solomon Islands will be producing 2,000 metric tons (4,400,000 pounds) of rice annually from 1,000 hectares (2,470 acres) of rice
