SUVA, Fiji Islands (March 19, 1999 - PACNEWS)---A new brand of Chinese-made cigarette lighters has been banned in Fiji.

A ban on "Taiyo" lighters was announced by the Trade Standards Advisory Council after tests in Australia showed they failed international safety standards. The testing laboratory described the lighters as a serious safety hazard.

The Director of Fair Trading in the Ministry of Commerce, Brij Prasad, said the lighters posed unacceptable safety risks, especially for children.

One million of the "Taiyo" lighters reportedly were imported into Fiji in January.

Prasad said cracks appear in the casing of the lighters when they are exposed to high temperatures.

Consumers have been warned not to use the lighters. Traders have been cautioned against selling the product.
