PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (March 23, 1999 - PACNEWS/National)---Sophia Gegeyo is Papua New Guinea's first woman Secretary-General of the PNG Council of Churches (PNGCC).

Gegeyo replaces Rev. Leva Kila Pat, who left after serving over 12 years.

Pat was chosen as one of three delegates chosen to represent Melanesian countries in the Fiji-based South Pacific Council of Churches.

The National reports that Gegeyo, 44, was the only woman among the 12 people who applied for the top PNGCC job.

Gegeyo said the selection committee has shown maturity in their decision to select a woman for the position and describes her new job "as an achievement and a challenge."

Gegeyo was the temporary acting secretary-general before the official appointment and has worked the PNGCC's women's desk for the past four years.
