PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (March 25, 1999 - Samoa News)---An ammonia leak aboard the vessel MV Hornet within the Samoa Packing area yesterday morning caused both fish canneries to evacuate all personnel.

A safety management representative for Starkist Samoa made the first call to the Department of Public Safety (DPS), alerting officials to the crisis around 9:15 a.m.

It was ascertained that the ammonia leak was coming from the fishing vessel docked at Samoa Packing.

Two ambulances were dispatched to the site, but according to sources at the scene there were no injuries. Emergency service personnel were on hand, however, to assist in case of an injury.

Traffic past the cannery area was backed up for an hour as officials cleared the area of contamination.
