AMERICAN SAMOA PROPOSES LIQUOR TAX TO FUND GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (March 25, 1999 - Samoa News)---Governor Tauese Sunia’s administration is seeking legislative approval of a 15 cent tax on alcoholic beverages as a source of funding for the Feleti Barstow Public Library and the Office of the Administrative Law Judge.

Additionally, a percentage of the revenue collected from the tax would be proposed to used to repay the Government’s $10 million loan from the Employees Retirement Fund.

The proposed law, according to the Governor’s communiqué forwarded to the legislature's leadership, excludes beer.

The proposed taxation would place a 15 cent tax on each one-percent of alcohol per liter, with a minimum tax of $2 per liter.
