PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (March 29, 1999 - Samoa News)---After years of delays -- resulting from disputes over road construction materials to design flaws -- the Route One Corridor Phase One project is finally heading from the drawing board to reality. A ground breaking ceremony was held this morning.

The project involves improvement of almost two miles of roadway from Fagaau to Fagatogo.

The road surface will consist of 3.5 inch thick concrete asphalt on top of a six inch base. The project also includes widening the width of the road, to vary from 30 to 40 feet, to accommodate curves in the road.

Pedestrians and bikers will be thrilled to note that the $3.8 million dollar project has been designed to include a concrete sidewalk with curbs and gutters, as well as two bicycle lanes.

Funding for the project is being provided by the United States Department of Transportation.
