RAROTONGA, Cook Islands (March 30, 1999 - Cook Islands Government/PIDP/CPIS)---The Cook Islands Chief Electoral Office has announced that the country's next general election will be held on June 16.

Under the Polynesian country's new electoral law, however, candidates and political parties are not permitted to campaign until five weeks before the general election.

In the past, there has been no restriction on campaigning, other than during the 24 hour period from 6:00 p.m. before polling day, until 6:00 p.m. on polling day, when the polls close.

The change in the campaigning period was recommended by the Political Review Commission last year and now will be tested for the first time.
