TARAWA, Kiribati (March 30, 1999 - PACNEWS)---The entire leadership of Kiribati's Church of God has been dismissed for alleged mismanagement of funds.

The announcement came at the church's general assembly this week in the capital, Tarawa.

The dismissals were ordered by the church's Oceania office in Australia.

Australian church officials said the Kiribati hierarchy not only grossly mismanaged funds, but repeatedly obstructed moves to reform the local church's organizational structure.

They maintain the reforms were aimed at making the Kiribati church more transparent and accountable.

The head of the Kiribati church, the Rev. Aberaam Maerere, who has been at the helm for more than 20 years, had his contract terminated. However, his case is expected to be reviewed.

An Advisory Board has been appointed to temporarily oversee the affairs of the Church of God, Kiribati's third largest Christian denomination.
