NAZHAT SHAMEEM MAKES HISTORY: FIRST FIJI WOMAN JUDGE

SUVA, Fiji Islands (April 9, 1999 - Fiji Times/Pasifik Nius/Niuswire)---Nazhat Shameem's appointment as a puisne judge makes her the first woman member of the judiciary in Fiji.

"I feel very honored," she said.

"I'm conscious that there is a lot of hard work ahead."

In 1994, she became the first woman to be appointed the Director of Public Prosecution.

On March 12, the Fiji Times revealed Ms Shameem's appointment, although then the judiciary could not confirm it.

Yesterday, Ms Shameem said that since she started studying law, her ambition was to be a judge.

"It was something that I thought I would very much want to do," she said.

On her role as the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ms Shameem said it had been extremely challenging and exciting.

"It has helped me to extend my horizons as a lawyer," she said.

Ms Shameem, 38, is married to Vodafone chief Aslam Khan. They have two children.

Her career as a legal officer began in the DPP's office in 1984.
