PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (April 9, 1999 - Samoa News)---"I believe this measure will further assist our efforts in the area of gun control," was the opinion of Governor Tauese Sunia in endorsing a bill that calls for a background check before a person is allowed to buy firearms.

Tauese advised the Fono leaders in a communiqué dated April 7th -- delivered to the Fono yesterday -- that "I am please to approve H.B. No. 26-14, an act providing for a background investigation for applicants seeking to possess firearms."

Government officials who testified before both chambers supported the legislation, which was passed two weeks ago.

The law is in line with that in some states, and a federal mandate that requires comparable action be taken before issuing firearms.
