KING SAYS TONGA WORKING TO REDUCE TRADE DEFICIT

NUKU‘ALOFA. Tonga (April 13, 1999 - PACNEWS/Radio Tonga)---The King of Tonga, Taufa‘ahau Tupou IV, says every effort is being made to reduce the Kingdom’s large trade deficit.

Tonga’s trade deficit, due to excess imports over exports, stood at US$ 56.5 million at the end of last year. Exports for the year totaled $US 7.2 million.

The King spoke about the large trade imbalance while opening the new complex for the Ministry of Agriculture in ‘Eua over the weekend.

He also discuss the need to further develop the country’s agriculture sector which, he said, could boost the current state of the economy.

He called for more commitment from the Tongan people to assure economic development.
