PACIFIC GOVERNMENTS URGED TO PROTECT FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

NADI, Fiji Islands (April 20, 1999 - Pacific Media Watch/Pasifik Nius/Niuswire)---Regional participants at last week's Media Control and Ownership Consultation in Fiji have called on Pacific governments to protect freedom of expression, support community owned media, and make the best use of new technologies.

The consultation, sponsored by the World Association for Christian

Communication - Pacific Region, was held in Nadi, 11-15 April 1999.

The participants endorsed the following statement:

PACIFIC MEDIA WATCH is an independent, non-profit, non-government organization comprising journalists, lawyers, editors and other media workers, dedicated to examining issues of ethics, accountability, censorship, media freedom and media ownership in the Pacific region. Launched in October 1996, it has links with the Journalism Program at the University of the South Pacific, Bushfire Media, the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism, and Pactok Communications, in Sydney and Port Moresby.
