SOUTH PACIFIC FORUM SECRETARIAT

Suva, Fiji Islands

PRESS STATEMENT April 21, 1999

The South Pacific Forum Secretariat today received US$ 131,000 from Taiwan/ROC to go towards four trade-related projects for Forum Island Countries.

It is part of a US$ 677,850 assistance package pledged in August last year at the Sixth Taiwan/ROC-Forum Countries Dialogue held in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, covering 19 projects submitted by seven regional organizations.

"We are very grateful for the generous assistance that Taiwan/ROC continues to provide the region," said the Secretary General of the South Pacific Forum Secretariat, Mr. Noel Levi, CBE, during the handing over by Mr. C.K. Ning, Representative of the Trade Mission of Taiwan/ROC in Fiji.

"We appreciate also the size and flexibility of the contributions which the Secretariat and other regional agencies will pass on to member states through a wide range of programs," Mr. Levi said.

The assistance for the Forum Secretariat will be used to fund an export marketing workshop for fisheries companies; a regional workshop on post-harvest handling of fruits and vegetables; a workshop on food processing and assistance for the Small Island States Development Fund.

Assistance from Taiwan/ROC to other regional organizations this year includes the Forum Fisheries Agency (computer equipment and vehicle); Pacific Islands Development Program (Pacific Islands Report); Secretariat for the Pacific Community (technical training in agriculture, women's programs, seafarer's regional database and fisheries); University of the South Pacific (computing facilities); Tourism Council of the South Pacific (management information and market research) and the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission (policy framework for sustainable development of non-living resources).
