PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (April 22, 1999 - PACNEWS/Radio Australia)---The Papua New Guinea Government is planning to lay off an additional 1,000 public servants.

Commerce and Industry Minister Ian Ling-Stuckey made the announcement during an address in the northern city of Lae.

Earlier, under the 1999 budget, the PNG Government announced plans to slash the public service by 7,000.

The Government had allocated $US 26.4 million for redundancy payments to public servants, a figure which now will have to be increases with the sacking of another 1,000 workers.

Ling-Stuckey said the success of the retrenchment process hinges on international loans and other sources of funding, which the government is yet to secure.
