HONIARA, Solomon Islands (April 27, 1999 - Radio Australia)---The rate of pay for civil servants and private sector workers no longer will be based on the cost of living.

A government statement reported that "pay increases will now be determined by increased productivity and improved performance."

While the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce has announced support for the move, unions have rejected it.
