PORT VILA, Vanuatu (May 3, 1999 -PACNEWS)---In Vanuatu, footprints of a crocodile have been sighted close to a village on the small island of Vanua Lava.

Authorities of the Northern Province reported to Radio Vanuatu that the footprints are 20 centimeters by nine centimeters.

It is believed the crocodile must be a five meter long saltwater croc. The footprints were noticed on the embankment of a river.

Inhabitants of a neighboring village, concerned at the crocodile's arrival, are determined to build a bridge across the river.

Saltwater crocodiles are sporadically spotted in the Northern Islands and since they do not breed in Vanuatu, they are suspected to have drifted from the neighboring Solomon Islands.
