FRENCH SPECIALISTS COLLECT SOIL AND WATER SAMPLES FROM NUCLEAR TEST SITES

SUVA, Fiji Islands (May 3, 1999 - PACNEWS)---A team of French specialists have been sent to three French Polynesian atolls used as test sites for nuclear weapons to collect soil and water samples.

Radio New Zealand reports the teams are on Mururoa, Fangataufa and Hao atolls as part of a project to assess the safety of the sites.

The information is to supplement data being collected with the use of satellites, seismic sensors and air filters.

The findings are expected to be made public.
