TARAWA, Kiribati (May 6, 1999 - PACNEWS)---The Kiribati Government has approved funds totaling US$ 25,000 to send its athletes to the South Pacific Games in Guam next month.

Secretary for Environment and Social Development Karibaiti Taoaba said the money would cover travel and living expenses for about 20 team athletes and officials.

Taoaba said the Government strongly supports the development of sports in Kiribati and says one way of improving the standard and quality of athletes is to send them to international sporting meets.

Eighteen countries will take part in the region’s major sporting event, scheduled to take place May 29-June 12.
