TARAWA AND BUTARITARI

TARAWA, Kiribati (May 7, 1999 – Radio Australia)---A team from the Hawai‘i-based Central Identification Laboratory has arrived in Kiribati to begin recovery of the remains of American Marines killed in battle during World War II.

The team will conduct excavation work on Tarawa and Butaritari islands, where major battles were fought between American and Japanese troops in 1943.

This is the first recovery mission in Kiribati by U.S. authorities since the end of the war more than 50 years ago.

The team is expected to spend a month in the Micronesian country before returning to Hawai‘i.
