LEO FALCAM ELECTED FSM PRESIDENT

PALIKIR, Federated States of Micronesia (May 11, 1999 - PIDP/CPIS/Hulsen)---Leo A. Falcam of Pohnpei was elected President of the Federated States of Micronesia Tuesday and Redley Killion of Chuuk Vice President during the first regular session of the 11th FSM Congress.

Falcam, former Vice President, succeeds Jacob Nena. He is the FSM’s fifth President.

Both Falcam and Vice President Killion were administered the Oath of Office by FSM Chief Justice Andon Amaraich.

During the ceremony in the FSM Congress Chamber, President Falcam said that he accepted "the passing of the torch" which was lit several years ago by the Congress and was carried first by President Tosiwo Nakayama, and then John Haglelgam, Bailey Olter and Jacob Nena.

He added that he is honored to have the trust and confidence of the 11th Congress, which has challenged him with the "awesome responsibilities of the highest office of the nation."

Vice President Killion, in brief remarks, said that he has been in Congress for 12 years and that he will support the President’s agenda for the nation.

He called on all leaders to put aside political differences and work together for the future of the FSM.

The session ended with a reception at the Central Facility Building in Palikir.
