PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (May 11, 1999 - Samoa News)--The U.S. Navy will participate in next year’s Flag Day Centennial celebrations, Lt. Governor Togiola Tulafono announced yesterday.

"That participation is going to be very large and extensive," said Togiola, "The Navy’s presence next April will make the Territory’s 100th anniversary as a United States territory a very special event."

According to Togiola, Governor Tauese Sunia wrote Secretary of the Navy John Dalton in May of 1997, inviting the Navy’s assistance in planning for the Centennial.

"Governor Sunia has been a lifelong student of the territory’s history," said Togiola. "He knows the tremendous role the U.S. Navy played in American Samoa throughout the first half of this century."
