HONIARA, Solomon Islands (May 24, 1999 – Radio Australia)---The Solomon Islands government has reported that it will declare three volcanic islands as permanent disaster areas.

The volcanic islands are Tinakula in Timatu province, Savo in Central province and Simbo in Western province.

The national parliament approved the declaration after debating a motion from opposition MP Alan Kemakeza. But it's yet to decide on the date the declaration will be implemented.

Mr. Kemakeza said the permanent declaration is needed to keep people away in the event of a volcanic eruption on one of the three islands.

Tinakula volcano is active while the Simba and Savo volcanoes currently are dormant.
