FRENCH GOVERNMENT APPROVES EXPANSION OF FRENCH POLYNESIA’S AUTONOMY

PARIS (May 28, 1999 - PACNEWS)---The French Cabinet yesterday approved a draft bill to expand the autonomy of French Polynesia in a move that would create citizenship for the people of the South Pacific archipelago.

The bill, to be introduced in the French Parliament, will also gradually transfer to the Government of French Polynesia and increase the authority of the locally elected Assembly in the capital, Pape‘ete.

The 200,000 citizens of French Polynesia will have special rights in winning jobs and setting up businesses.

French Polynesia, an archipelago scattered over 118 islands and atolls, is a French overseas territory.
