SUVA, Fiji (June 3, 1999 - Radio Australia)---Fiji and India have officially restored full diplomatic relations.

The first Indian High Commissioner to Fiji in nine years has presented his credentials to Fiji's President, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara:

Professor Ishwar Chawhan delayed his arrival in Fiji until after the elections last month, not wanting to be accused of interference. However, although he's now accredited to a Fiji headed by an ethnic Indian Prime Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry, his appointment came following an invitation to India by the former Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to re-establish full diplomatic relations.

Professor Chawhan, who did his doctoral work on leadership in the Indian community of Fiji, said he regarded Fiji as his second home.
