NUKU‘ALOFA, Tonga (June 2, 1999 - PACNEWS)---A leading hotelier in Tonga has described as "pathetic" the quality of tourism facilities in the Kingdom.

This, according to General Manager of the International Dateline Hotel, Simote Pouliva‘ati, is leading to a gradual decline of the industry.

He made the comment during a special Tongan Visitors Bureau program broadcast on Radio Tonga.

He said a number of training programs have been conducted in the industry to improve performance, without much enthusiasm.

Pouliva’ati said the quality of tourism facilities and services has been a major stumbling block in efforts to market the Kingdom as a tourism destination.

He pointed out a major conference of executives of Germany’s national airline, Lufthansa, scheduled for this month has been cancelled. The Dateline Hotel has been carrying out major renovation work in preparation for the Lufthansa meeting.

Pouliva‘ati believes stories about poor quality services and facilities, as well the recent typhoid outbreak, are keeping potential tourists away from the Kingdom.
