RABUKA QUITS PARLIAMENT IN FIJI

SUVA, Fiji Islands---(June 8, 1999 - Fijilive) The new chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs and former Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed he would resign from Parliament after being sworn in on June 14.

Mr. Rabuka made the announcement after accepting a majority decision by the Great Council of Chiefs last Friday to become their next independent chairman.

He also assured the council that he would resign as president of the Soqosoqo ni Vakavulewa ni Taukei (SVT) party, a post he held for two weeks.

The constitution states that a seat in the House of Representatives becomes vacant if the member resigns.
