Regarding the news item, "Cook Islanders Forgotten In The Queen's Honor List" (Pacific Islands Report, June 10, 1999, from PACNEWS/Cook Islands Television):

Dedicated service to the community paid off for six people at the weekend.

Member of the British Empire medals were bestowed on Soa Tini Joseph of Omoka, Penrhyn, Tai Turia of Aitutaki, Tautara Purea of Mauke and, posthumously, on Mataroa Potiki of Rarotonga.

Turatoru Pekepo of Titikaveka and the only woman recipient, Elizabeth Bailey, received the British Empire Medal.

Messrs. Purea, Pekepo, Turia and Joseph's awards were for services to education and the community. Mrs. Bailey's award was for services to the community, particularly in charitable and NGO organizations, while the late Mr. Mataroa's was for services to the building industry. His son, Keu Mataroa, was present to receive the award.
